Environmental and Safety Committee

The PAIKY Environmental Committee is an on-going effort on the part of the asphalt industry to understand and respond to environmental issues that impact asphalt production and construction.
The committee works diligently to address local and national environmental and safety issues in concert with the National Asphalt Pavement Association. We strive to work on issues in a positive matter with agencies and government regulators.

Kentucky Asphalt Pavement Alliance

The Kentucky Asphalt Pavement Alliance (KAPA) committee has emerged from the previous PAIKY marketing committee as a result of the national effort to create state alliances across the country. These alliances were formed to unify the marketing efforts of the National Asphalt Pavement Association, the Asphalt Institute, and the State Asphalt Pavement Association Executives (of which, PAIKY is a member). The national alliance has been named the Asphalt Pavement Alliance (APA) and is funded by the National Asphalt Pavement Association and the Asphalt Institute with the support of the state asphalt pavement associations. The committee consists of PAIKY members, Asphalt Institute, asphalt suppliers, and associate members. In addition to the members of the committee, PAIKY has retained the services of a public relations firm to assist in these marketing efforts. The Kentucky Asphalt Pavement Alliance was one of the first state alliances to be formed in the country and has served as a model for other states to follow.

In addition to traditional marketing and lobbying efforts, the KAPA Committee is also focused on the technical aspects of the promoting hot mix asphalt pavements. The committee studies and is involved in the Pavement Type Selection process including structural thickness design and life cycle cost analysis. The committee also researches available local and national data and research to support our industry position on a variety of technical issues related to the Pavement Type Selection process.

Technical Committee

The PAIKY technical committee has long been a partner with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet on improving the design, production, and quality of hot mix asphalt.
The committee routinely works to address concerns in the current specifications and to provide input on proposed new specifications developed by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. In addition to those topics that involve state-funded projects, the committee has developed and reviewed various publications related to intersections, parking lots, thickness design, and pavement thickness design.

Winter Training School Committee

The committee works each year to plan the PAIKY Winter Training School held annually in Louisville. The committee consists of PAIKY producer members, asphalt suppliers, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet who meet on a regular basis to coordinate this event. The event typically draws more than 500 in attendance from paving contractors, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, cities, counties, and consultants. The program includes nationally recognized industry speakers as well as local experts. The topics are timely and pertinent for the member companies and Transportation Cabinet.
